THE ART OF EXPRESSION

FAQs

What is art therapy?

Art therapy is a form of therapy that uses the creative  process of art making to improve mental health and well-being. During the art therapy session, the art process can serve as a medium for self-expression, allowing individuals to communicate and explore their thoughts, emotions, and experiences in a non-verbal and less intimidating way.

Who is art therapy for?

Art therapy is for anyone! We provide art therapy for people of all ages. Of course, not all therapies will work for everyone. Therapy is not a one size fits all approach. Art therapy is for anyone who would like to use the making of art in their therapy session. Art therapy would suit someone who struggles with verbalizing what is happening for them. Art therapy would suit someone who does not like to talk about their issues. Art therapy would also suit someone who does like to talk! Our clients vary from being non-verbal, selective mute, to occasional talks

and continuous chatting.

Do I need to be arty or have a special skill to do art therapy?

Absolutely not! You do not need to be skilled in the use of art materials and you do not need to have experience in making art.

Do you provide services under the NDIS?

Yes, we do. If you access NDIS funding and are either Self-managed or Plan-managed you can use your funding with us.

Can I use my mental health care plan?

Unfortunately, art therapy is not covered under a mental health care plan.

Can I have my counselling session online?

Yes, you can! We provide online art therapy sessions. You will need a device and an internet connection to join your art therapist. We recommend that you have a private space set up at home.

What are the main goals of therapy?

Together with your therapist you will identify the goals you want to work on. For example, goals could be focused around: emotional regulation, interpersonal relationship challenges, exploring your sense of self-worth, processing grief and many more. You can incorporate your NDIS goals into the therapy sessions as well.

Does the art therapist analyze or interpret the art?

The art therapist will not analyze or interpret your artwork. The art therapy is for you to express your thoughts and feelings in an artwork. You will do this in your own unique way. If the art therapist were to analyze your work, it would be their own personal interpretation and not yours. You might have painted a bear, someone else might see this as

a person. The therapist can support you in gaining insights into what you have made by supporting you to reflect on your artwork yourself.

Can you do art therapy online?

Yes, you can! We provide online art therapy sessions. You will need a device and an internet connection to join your art therapist. We recommend that you have a private space set up at home with different art materials that you can use during your online art therapy session.and continuous chatting.

Do I get to keep the artwork I make?

Clients can choose if they take their artworks home or if they prefer to leave it with the therapist. We will look after your artwork if you do not want to take it home. Sometimes the therapist might advise to not take an artwork home, especially if it has been part of expressing some heavy emotions/letting go process.

Do I need to bring or buy anything?

If you are attending your art therapy in person, we will provide you with all the materials you need. If you are attending your therapy online, you will need to set up your art therapy space at home and purchase the art materials you would like to use yourself. We do recommend that you wear clothes which you do not mind getting dirty or stained.
